Final Installation

An immersive installation focusing on the connection between humans and how this relationship relates to elements of nature. A self-written poem is projected onto the trunk of a tree as a breeze blows in the distance.

Written Statement

My final project is an immersive installation that focuses on the connection between the physical and the mental aspects of being. I created my display by projecting a poem onto the trunk of a tree. The poem is projected with white words onto the tree and is presented as it is being typed by the speaker. The typed text effect was created by typing my poem in real-time and screen recording as I went. I typed and recorded each stanza separately and then pieced them together using the Premiere Pro and its ultra-key tool. I learned that the text needed to be white in order for it to appear clearly against the tree trunk. I also formatted my projection as 1080 x 1920 pixels in order for the projection to fit onto the trunk. As the poem is being typed and is appearing onto the tree, the viewer hears a subtle breeze in the background. The viewer is encouraged to explore the display from various angles and perspectives. The piece is inspired by my interest in the connections and interactions between humans and how they can relate to nature. The poem focuses on one’s desire to hold onto their past rather than allowing themselves to let go and to be let go. It ventures into the idea that once we allow ourselves to be swept away with the natural timing of things, we can become like the earth and become grounded. The guiding images are that of the tree, the leaves, and the decomposed leaves that become the “sand”. This piece allowed me to explore personal interests of mine such as poetry and tie it back into my experimentation with new media mediums. In my career as an artist, I look forward to further exploring the possibilities of joining new media and poetry through installation.
